What Do We Really Need?

I am so proud of my daughter. Even though our church's Guest At Your Table program is wrapping up, Fin is just now "getting it". Having the collection box on the table has been great for opening up conversations about how there are people in the world living without the basic necessities and rights we have. We have focused our talks mostly on tangible things, like food, clothes, and clean water, since those are things a five-year-old can grasp.

Fin has had a hard time putting money into the box, though. She now understands that money can buy things; fun things like toys and ice cream. Putting precious money into a box to help unknown people was a stretch for her. Then, last night, something clicked. It seems to be the pictures on the collection box. It wasn't Unknown Person needing water, it was that smiling man on the side of the box. She started gathering up all of the change she could find and dropping it coin by coin into the box. "Dis coin for her, dis coin for her," as she pointed to each picture in turn. (Side note: Fin doesn't yet use male pronouns, everyone is a "her" or "she".) Tonight, she wanted to add more coins and this time she was really thinking about what the money could do. It started to get more and more of a "Fin flair" to it, though. A sampling:

"Dis buy water for her."
"Dis buy food for her."
"Dis buy clothes for her."
"Dis go to the doctor for her."
"Dis for the teeth for her." (We hadn't even talked about medical and dental care!)
"Dis for a house for her."
"Dis for a computer for her."
"Dis for cat's food for her."
"Dis for a treat for her."
"Dis for a horsie shirt for her."
"Dis for a look n listen scope for her." (Whazzup, Disney parents!)
"Dis for chocolate for her."

Okay, seriously, Fin is one of the sweetest and funniest girls I "know"!
This is precious~ It's so great how it's all making sense to her. It's also interesting to see the things she sees as basic essentials for living... I personally have never had a horsie shirt.

Fin's such a sweetheart. And it's cool to see her mind making the connections.

Re: the side note: I think Fin's mom needs more men in her life. ;-)
